Flu Shot Vaccinations

There is quite a bit of controversy surrounding vaccinations and the influenza (flu) virus. There are many different strains of the flu virus and every one has the ability to mutate. Researchers say that big changes in the flu virus (called shifts) happen about every ten years and are what cause pandemics.

Flu shot vaccines are created every year by scientists that select a small group of the flu viruses that they believe will be most severe. An inactivated form of those viruses is then used for the flu vaccine. After getting a flu shot you will normally develop symptoms of the flu. Because there are many different strains of the flu virus and they change and mutate getting a flu shot does not even guarantee that you won't become infected with one of the strains that is not included in the current years vaccination.

"A late flu outbreak appears to be hitting Nebraska's urban areas, according to the state epidemiologist. One of the residents died when his respiratory infection led to pneumonia. Nearly all of the residents received flu shots before the outbreak there." (Midwest Nurse Week, Vol.3, No. 2; March/April 2002, p27)

Several studies and government projections confirm that with or without a flu shot, pneumonia and influenza hospitalization rates for the elderly are less than 1% during the influenza season. This means that, regardless of vaccination status, more than 99% of people weather a bout of flu without requiring hospitalization. The director of CDC's National Immunization Program, Dr. Walter Orenstein, reported at an influenza conference that the "at risk" population, for influenza complications are small.

Besides the normal flu symptoms that occur after receiving a flu shot there are other more severe side effects and possibly fatal. Instead of protecting people mass vaccination programs, like influenza, measles, mumps, and rubella, can actually predispose people to the diseases through the process of sensitization. This is a very serious problem that can lead to fatalities.

An immunopathological reaction to the vaccine in some people is believed to have caused about 500 cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome resulting in death from severe pulmonary complications for 25 people. More people died from the vaccine than died from the swine flu itself. (http://www.haverford.edu/biology/edwards/disease/viral_essays/warnervirus.htm)

Guillain-Barre' is associated with the flu vaccine. Over 4000 law suits, and around 3 billion dollars have been paid out in compensation for hundreds of cases of Guillain-Barre' paralysis.

A vaccine that U. S. health officials say all persons over age 65 should receive appears to be ineffective or worse, according to a report in The Lancet. A Swedish study of 23-valent pneumococcal capsular polvsaccharide vaccines involving nearly 700 elderly patients concluded that it does not prevent the incidence or consequences of pneumoccal pneumonia. There has been little research to date that justifies the use of this popular vaccine, although "doctors assumed it worked". The study further showed that the vaccinated group developed a 23 percent higher incidence of pneumonia. In a brilliant flash of medical logic, the author of this study recently told reporters that he still recommends the vaccine for older persons because pneumonia "is extremely dangerous in elder people". (The Lancet, February 7, 1998, United Press, February 5, 1998, 'Report questions pneumonia vaccine'.)

Parents of children are being urged to give their children many various vaccinations. These vaccinations are not helping to boost the children's immune system. Maybe parents should be urged to help their child's immune system rather than infecting them with inactivated viruses and predisposing them to diseases? It is recommended by many doctors that a flu shot should be taken every year, somebody is benefiting from this and it may not be the patients.
