Ocular Herpes - Eye Herpes

Ocular herpes is when the herpes virus has infected the eye. Genital herpes and oral herpes are both much more common than ocular herpes. Ocular herpes seems to most often develop when a dormant herpes virus makes home in the facial nerves. Typically, these viruses remain permanently dormant, but they can rarely become active and spread throughout the infected person's facial nerves to the ocular nerves.

Ocular herpes symptoms in most cases are generally fairly harmless. These symptoms include light sensitivity, light pain, and redness. The ocular herpes will leave little scaring and will cover the corneal portion of the eye.

In severe cases of eye herpes, there can be a possibility of vision loss, and even blindness. It depends on how severe the scar tissue is that is formed around the cornea. The deeper that the virus travels through the eye - cornea - retina - surrounding eye tissue, the higher the chance is that there can be severe scaring.

Some research has been done that has shown that in some of the cases where ocular herpes was more severe was because of a weakened or delayed reaction to the virus by the immune system. Researchers have not yet been able to figure out what exactly causes the herpes to go from being dormant and turning active into an ocular herpes outbreak. Some research has shown however that outbreaks have developed along with sunburns, and fevers. These possible symptoms along with an outbreak have led some researchers into thinking that stress could be a large cause of an ocular herpes outbreak.

Ocular herpes treatment can vary from patient to patient. It will also depend on the severity of the ocular herpes outbreak itself. Many patients are even affected differently depending on the type of treatment. Some treatments can actually worsen the outbreaks. Eye ointments or eye drops can help with the less severe cases of ocular herpes.

In more server cases of eye herpes steroids have been used and applied to the affected area in the form of eye drops. This can help reduce the inflammation of the eye. Many doctors treat ocular herpes with an antiviral eye drop to help fight the herpes virus.
