I'm a functional and lifestyle medicine practitioner, and I believe healing begins when we stop chasing symptoms and start listening to the body as a whole. The gut is almost always where that conversation starts. It's where food becomes nourishment, where much of your immune system lives, and where the brain and body stay in constant dialogue.
My approach is rooted in six simple pillars ā whole-food nutrition, movement, restorative sleep, stress resilience, avoiding harmful exposures, and meaningful connection ā paired with the diagnostic depth of functional medicine to find the root cause. This guide walks you through how I think about gut health, the science behind it, and the practical, doable steps that restore balance over time.

Why the Gut Is the Root
Most chronic complaints ā bloating, fatigue, brain fog, skin flare-ups, mood swings ā trace back further than the symptom itself. Functional medicine asks a different question: not just what is wrong, but why.
Conventional care is excellent at naming and managing symptoms. Functional medicine adds a second lens: it treats the whole person and looks upstream for the conditions that allowed the symptom to appear in the first place. And remarkably often, the trail leads back to the gut.
That's not a wellness slogan ā it's anatomy and physiology. The gut is where digestion happens, where a large share of immune tissue lives, and where trillions of microbes produce compounds that influence inflammation, mood, hormones, and energy far beyond the digestive tract. When the gut is out of balance, the effects rarely stay local. This is exactly why a gut imbalance can show up as a skin problem, a sleep problem, or a mood problem.
The map practitioners use
Functional medicine clinicians don't guess. When assessing any GI concern, they look at several connected components of gut health: digestion and absorption, intestinal barrier integrity, the balance of the microbiome (dysbiosis), inflammation, and the gutābrain relationship. The Institute for Functional Medicine organizes this into a screening framework known as DIGIN, and a restoration roadmap called the 5R Framework ā the structure we'll return to throughout this guide.1
Traditional approaches often isolate symptoms. Functional medicine treats the whole person ā recognizing that gut imbalances can trigger issues far outside the digestive tract, including brain fog, fatigue, skin flare-ups, and mood swings. Practitioners use personalized nutrition, targeted lifestyle change, and botanical support to rebuild and maintain long-term balance.
Here's the encouraging part: the gut is one of the most modifiable systems in the body. The same daily inputs that disrupt it ā food, stress, sleep, movement, microbes ā are the inputs you can adjust. That's where your power is, and that's what the rest of this guide is about.
Your Microbiome ā The Inner Ecosystem
Before we talk about anything going wrong, meet the community living inside you ā and what it does for you every single day.
Your intestinal microbiome is best understood as a signaling hub: it takes in environmental inputs like diet and lifestyle and translates them into messages that ripple across your metabolism, your immune system, and your nervous system. It is not a passive bag of bacteria. It is an active organ you feed, shape, and influence with every meal and every night of sleep.
What a healthy microbiome actually does
The beneficial, symbiotic microbes in your gut ā often called commensal species ā earn their keep. As they ferment the fiber you eat, they produce compounds called short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Those SCFAs strengthen the gut barrier, help train balancing immune cells, and turn down inflammatory signaling. In other words, a well-fed microbiome literally helps build and defend the wall of your gut.
The barrier that changes everything
Picture the lining of your intestine as a smart, selective wall ā one cell thick in places. It's designed to let nutrients through while keeping bacterial byproducts out of your bloodstream. When the microbiome is balanced and SCFAs are flowing, that wall stays tight. When balance is lost, the wall can loosen ā and that single shift is upstream of a surprising amount of whole-body symptoms, as we'll see next.
Two people can eat the same meal and feel completely different afterward. The difference often isn't the food alone ā it's the ecosystem digesting it. That's why functional medicine personalizes: we work with your microbiome, not a generic one.
How you feed the ecosystem
- Fiber diversity ā different plants feed different beneficial species. Aim for variety, not just quantity.
- Fermented and prebiotic-rich foods ā yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, onions, garlic, asparagus.
- Fewer disruptors ā ultra-processed foods and excess added sugar tilt the balance the wrong way.

The GutāImmune Connection
If the gut is the root, the immune system is where its influence becomes unmistakable ā for better or worse.
The relationship between your microbiome and your immune system is a two-way conversation, and it is well-documented. This crosstalk is so fundamental that it shapes how the immune system matures and behaves across your entire life. Studies of germ-free animals ā raised with no gut microbes at all ā show significant immune deficiency, underscoring just how much the immune system depends on a healthy microbial partner.
Balance is the goal ā not just "more"
A healthy immune system has to do two opposite things well: defend against genuine threats, and tolerate the harmless. Your commensal microbes help it strike that balance. The SCFAs and other metabolites they produce promote balancing regulatory T cells (Tregs) and dial down pro-inflammatory signals. This is the science beneath a familiar idea: a healthy gut supports a well-regulated immune response, not an overreactive one.
When balance is lost: dysbiosis and the leaky barrier
When the balance tips toward pathogenic species ā a state called dysbiosis ā the immune system shifts into a more inflammatory posture. Sustained inflammation can erode the integrity of the gut barrier. Once that wall loosens, bacterial byproducts (like lipopolysaccharides) can slip into circulation and trigger immune activation at sites far from the intestine. This is the mechanism that connects gut imbalance to whole-body, even distant, inflammation.
Research has linked gut dysbiosis and barrier dysfunction to inflammatory and autoimmune processes far beyond the gut ā including conditions affecting the joints, thyroid, and skin (the "gutāskin axis").3 This is educational context, not a claim that any product treats these conditions. It explains why functional medicine treats the gut as foundational.
You can't out-supplement an inflamed gut. Calm the terrain first, and the immune system often stops shouting on its own.

The takeaway is hopeful: because diet and lifestyle shape the microbiome, they give us a real, daily lever to influence inflammation and immune balance from the ground up.
The GutāSkin Connection
When something on the surface won't settle down, the most useful question often isn't "what cream will fix this?" ā it's "what is the skin trying to tell me?"
In conventional thinking, skin is a covering ā something to wash, moisturize, and occasionally medicate at the surface. A whole-person view sees it differently: the skin is one of the body's most honest organs, a living interface that defends you, takes part in immune signaling, helps with detoxification, and quietly broadcasts what's happening underneath. Your skin, in other words, is often not the problem. It's the messenger.
Your skin has its own ecosystem
Like your gut, your skin carries its own microbiome ā a community of bacteria, fungi, and other organisms living on its surface. Researchers estimate the skin hosts more than 1,200 microbial species, and those communities shift by terrain: the oily zones, the dry zones, and the damp folds are each a different neighborhood with different residents. The point is that skin never works in isolation. It's in constant conversation with the immune system, the nervous system, your nutrient status, your hormones, your inflammatory tone ā and, again and again, the gut.
The gut and skin are always talking
Your gut microbes do far more than break down lunch. As they ferment fibers and nutrients, they produce compounds ā microbial metabolites ā that don't stay put. They enter circulation and influence systems throughout the body, the skin included. Short-chain fatty acids like butyrate support healthy immune signaling and inflammatory balance, and appear to influence how skin cells behave, repair, and weather stress. The gut also interacts with messengers we usually file under "mood" ā GABA, serotonin, dopamine ā that may also touch skin-related processes like itching, inflammation, pigmentation, and hair growth. When we say the gut and skin are "in conversation," it's almost literal: what happens at one end tends to show up at the other.
Your skin is not the problem. Your skin is the messenger. When the surface won't settle, I've learned to stop asking what cream will fix it and start asking what the skin is trying to tell me.

Inflammation is the bridge
If there's a single thread connecting gut imbalance to skin complaints, it's inflammation. When the microbiome is off balance, when there are food reactions, or when the intestinal barrier becomes more permeable than it should, the body tends to generate more inflammatory signaling ā and those signals don't stay confined to the gut. They travel, and the skin is frequently one of the tissues they reach. It's why conditions like psoriasis, eczema, acne, rosacea, and atopic dermatitis are worth viewing through a whole-body lens: they show up on the skin, but they often involve deeper patterns in immune response, microbial balance, inflammation, and barrier integrity.
A topical product may calm the surface ā and sometimes that's a welcome, reasonable step. But the deeper question is the one worth circling back to: what is actually driving the inflammatory response in the first place? Soothe the surface if you can, and look upstream at the same time.
"My digestion is fine" doesn't close the door
Here's something the gutāskin connection teaches over and over: people with skin problems often report no digestive complaints at all. That's worth taking seriously ā but it isn't the final word. Many of us have quietly normalized bloating, irregular bowel movements, reflux, or food sensitivities because we've lived with them so long they became baseline. Others carry gut inflammation or microbiome imbalance with no obvious digestive symptoms whatsoever. So a stubborn inflammatory skin pattern with a "fine" gut is an invitation to look closer, not a reason to look away ā at gut function, nutrient status, inflammation, immune activity, stress, and microbial balance together.
What psoriasis and IBD reveal
A few conditions make the gutāskin link hard to ignore, and psoriasis alongside inflammatory bowel disease sits near the top of the list. Both are immune-mediated inflammatory conditions, and they appear to share overlapping pathways ā immune dysregulation, inflammation, and shifts in microbial balance. In the psoriasis research, recurring patterns include reduced microbial diversity, lower levels of certain beneficial organisms, changes in bacteria such as Akkermansia and Bacteroides, and signs of intestinal barrier dysfunction, with immune pathways like Th17 signaling connecting gut and skin inflammation. This doesn't mean every case of psoriasis "starts in the gut" ā biology is rarely that tidy ā but it strongly suggests the gut and skin are taking part in the same larger inflammatory conversation.
Skin is metabolically demanding tissue that needs a steady supply of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, vitamin C, zinc, selenium, magnesium, and polyphenols to maintain structure, repair, and regulate inflammation. When absorption is compromised by poor digestion, gut inflammation, or microbiome imbalance, the skin is often one of the first places hidden deficiencies become visible ā dryness, slow healing, or rough, bumpy texture. The skin isn't just hungry; it may be signaling that the gut isn't delivering.
Stress and the gutābraināskin axis
You can't fully separate the gut and skin from the brain ā they're wired together in what's called the gutābraināskin axis. Stress isn't just a feeling: it can weaken the gut barrier, shift the microbiome, alter immune activity and inflammatory signaling, and even change what the skin itself secretes (which in turn affects the skin's own microbiome). It's why a flare so often lines up with a stretch of poor sleep, overwork, grief, or nervous-system overload. The skin isn't only reacting to what touches it from outside ā it's responding to the body's internal stress chemistry. This is why skin-supportive plans so often include real nervous-system care: breathwork, mindfulness, gentle movement, and better sleep.
Healthy-looking skin tends to grow out of a healthy internal foundation. So a whole-body approach simply asks better questions: What's happening in the gut? Is the microbiome producing beneficial metabolites? Is inflammation being regulated the way it should be? Are nutrients actually being absorbed? When you look beneath the surface, the skin almost always starts to make sense.
When the Gut Talks Back: Understanding IBS
Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most common gut conditions in the world ā and one of the most misunderstood.
IBS belongs to a group now called disorders of gutābrain interaction (DGBIs).6 The name itself tells the story: this isn't "all in your head," and it isn't purely in your gut either ā it's the communication between the two. IBS carries a real and heavy daily burden, and it comes in subtypes: diarrhea-predominant (IBS-D), constipation-predominant (IBS-C), mixed (IBS-M), and unspecified (IBS-U).
The root causes underneath the label
Here's where functional medicine differs from a simple diagnosis. "IBS" is a description of symptoms ā not an explanation. Research suggests the underlying picture often includes an altered microbiome, increased inflammation and intestinal permeability, and systemic immune reactivity. Multiple contributors can feed an IBS diagnosis, including:
- Post-infectious triggers. A prior gut infection is a well-recognized risk factor; the type of pathogen may even influence the risk.
- Digestive insufficiency & bile acid issues. Abnormal bile acid handling is closely related to IBS, and bile acid malabsorption can drive loose stools and diarrhea.
- Reduced microbial diversity. Disruption of gut balance ā with lower diversity ā is commonly observed, particularly in IBS-D.
- Triggers that flare symptoms. Certain foods, stress, and hormonal fluctuations repeatedly surface as flare drivers.
Two people with the identical "IBS" label can need opposite plans ā one is driven by a past infection and dysbiosis, another by bile acid malabsorption and stress. That's why a personalized assessment matters more than the label.
What actually helps
Because the causes are layered, the most effective strategies are layered too. A range of lifestyle and non-pharmacological tools can help restore a healthier microbiome and reduce gut permeability ā from nutritional approaches to exercise and mindābody interventions. This is precisely where the 5R Framework (Chapter 7) gives you a step-by-step path rather than a guessing game.
SIBO & Microbial Balance
Sometimes the problem isn't which bacteria you have ā it's where they're living.
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, or SIBO, is exactly what it sounds like: too much bacteria in the small intestine, where the population is normally kept low. It produces a frustrating mix of digestive and non-digestive symptoms, and it tends to keep company with other conditions.
Why it happens
A leading thread in the research is motility ā the rhythmic sweeping movement that keeps the small intestine clear.7 When transit slows or motility falters, bacteria get the chance to settle and multiply where they shouldn't. This is why "fixing SIBO" is rarely just about killing bacteria; it's about restoring the conditions that keep balance in the first place.
The company it keeps
SIBO frequently overlaps with other conditions, which is part of why it's easy to miss. Research links it with IBS and other gutābrain disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, motility disorders, and several non-GI conditions ā and it appears more often alongside things like celiac disease, diabetes, rosacea, and metabolic-associated liver disease than in controls.
SIBO can be genuinely tricky to diagnose. Clinical guidelines describe small-bowel aspirate/culture and breath testing as options, while the field continues to refine the criteria. The functional medicine priority is to identify and address the underlying cause of the overgrowth ā not just the overgrowth itself. Work with a qualified practitioner for testing and a plan.
The restoration mindset
Conventional treatment may involve antibiotics, and nutritional strategies ā therapeutic foods, meal timing, and identifying aggravating foods ā can play a meaningful role. Functional medicine wraps these into a structured approach using the 5R Framework to rebuild a natural, lasting balance in the GI system.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Crohn's & UC
IBD is a serious, medically managed condition ā and a powerful example of how genes, environment, and the immune system collide in the gut.
Inflammatory bowel disease covers disorders marked by chronic inflammation of the GI tract. Its two primary forms are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (UC), and its prevalence has climbed globally since 1990. This is not a condition to self-manage ā it requires a medical team. The value of a functional lens here is in understanding the terrain and supporting it alongside standard care.
Crohn's vs. ulcerative colitis
- Crohn's disease can appear anywhere along the GI tract and affect any layer of the intestinal wall, most often the lower small intestine and large intestine. Because it can damage the small intestine, malnutrition is a distinguishing concern.
- Ulcerative colitis is confined to the mucosal lining of the colon, where inflammation typically forms ulcers; rectal bleeding is a more characteristic feature.
Both share core symptoms ā pain, diarrhea, fatigue, fever, and weight loss ā which is why distinguishing them requires proper medical evaluation.
What's driving it
The full causes aren't completely understood, but the leading model is an interplay of the immune system, genetics, and environment. Features of a "Westernized" lifestyle ā urban living, pollution exposure, dietary change, antibiotic access ā have been associated with disease development, and environmental toxins are an active area of investigation for Crohn's specifically.
Standard guidelines emphasize reducing inflammation and achieving mucosal healing. Alongside that, research has highlighted nutritional approaches ā prioritizing fruits, vegetables, and fiber, plus phytonutrients and antioxidants ā and a body of evidence on probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics for supporting remission, especially in UC. For Crohn's care, guidelines even recommend assessing and managing stress, depression, and anxiety as part of comprehensive treatment.
The thread connecting IBS, SIBO, and IBD is the same one running through this entire guide: a disrupted microbiome and a compromised barrier sit upstream of inflammation. The conditions differ in severity and management, but the foundational terrain ā and the lifestyle levers that support it ā overlaps.
Sleep & the Microbiome
The most underrated gut intervention isn't a food or a supplement. It's the seven to nine hours you spend doing nothing.
Sleep is a modifiable lifestyle factor with a direct line to gut function. Lower sleep quality has been associated with dysbiosis, inflammation, and disturbances in the gutābrain axis. And the relationship runs both ways ā microbial communities interact with the sleepāwake cycle in a complex, reciprocal loop.
What the research shows
- Sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia have been associated with alterations in the gut microbiome.
- Sleep deprivation may drive dysbiosis and, in turn, impair immune function ā tying poor sleep back to the immune story from Chapter 2.8
- Better sleep tracks with a richer microbiome: studies have found that higher sleep quality and longer sleep duration are associated with greater microbial diversity and more beneficial species such as Bifidobacterium.
Screening your own sleep is the first step. For one week, note your bedtime, wake time, and how rested you feel. Patterns you can't see, you can't change. Encouragingly, dietary and probiotic strategies ā along with exercise and mindābody practices ā may support both better sleep and a healthier gut.
Build a gut-friendly sleep rhythm
- Anchor your wake time ā same time daily, even on weekends. Consistency steadies both sleep and digestion.
- Mind your meal timing ā finishing meals earlier supports overnight gut repair.
- Morning light, evening dimming ā light cues set the rhythm your microbes ride along with.
- Protect the wind-down ā a calm pre-sleep routine lowers the stress signaling that disrupts the gut.
Feeding the Microbiome
The most direct lever you have over your gut sits at the end of your fork ā and it works two ways: feeding the microbes you already have, and adding new ones.
A balanced microbiome is built meal by meal. Two food strategies do most of the heavy lifting: prebiotics, which feed the beneficial microbes already living in you, and live-microbe foods, which add helpful organisms directly. Together they're the everyday engine behind a diverse, resilient gut.
Prebiotics in, postbiotics out
Prebiotics are fibers and compounds your gut microbes selectively use as fuel. When beneficial bacteria ferment them, they release postbiotics ā the helpful byproducts of that fermentation. The short-chain fatty acids from Chapter 1 (butyrate, propionate, and acetate) are the headline postbiotics: they feed the cells lining your colon, strengthen the gut barrier, support satiety and steadier blood sugar, and carry anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects throughout the body. In short, you feed the microbes, and the microbes pay you back.
Asparagus, bananas, barley, beans, chicory root, garlic, onions, leeks, peas, rye, soybeans, tomatoes, and whole grains are all naturally rich in prebiotic fibers like inulin-type fructans, resistant starch, and polyphenols. Daily inulin-type fructans have been linked with more beneficial Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, better barrier function, and improved satiety ā and about 50 g of whole grains a day has been associated with lower type-2-diabetes risk.
One reason variety matters so much: your specific microbes decide which postbiotics you actually make. The same polyphenol can be turned into different beneficial compounds ā or none at all ā depending on who's living in your gut. A diverse, plant-forward plate is the most reliable way to keep a wide range of prebiotic fibers flowing and to maximize the beneficial metabolites your particular microbiome can produce.
Foods that carry live microbes
Beyond feeding your microbes, you can add living ones at the table. Foods carry live microbes in roughly three tiers: low (pasteurized, processed foods), medium (fresh fruits and vegetables, especially eaten unpeeled), and high (unpasteurized fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and miso). The research here is genuinely encouraging.
- In a 2021 Stanford trial, ten weeks of a fermented-food diet increased microbiome diversity and lowered inflammatory markers ā more than a high-fiber diet did over the same period.4
- In a large 2023 analysis of US adults, higher live-microbe intake was associated with healthier blood pressure, lower inflammation (CRP), better glucose and lipid markers, and a smaller waist circumference.5
- A 2024 study of more than 34,000 adults found that higher intake of live-microbe foods was associated with lower all-cause and cardiovascular mortality and a modestly slower pace of biological aging.5
Much of this evidence is observational ā it shows associations, not guarantees, and no single study settles a question. But the findings point the same direction: a steady stream of fiber-rich plants and live-microbe foods supports a more diverse, resilient gut. (Worth noting: these food studies didn't count probiotic supplements ā this is about what's on your plate.)
This is the Reinoculate step of the 5R Framework in everyday clothes ā re-seeding and feeding the ecosystem through food first. It pairs naturally with the rest of your routine rather than replacing any of it.
A simple weekly rhythm
- Aim for 30+ different plants a week ā diversity of plants drives diversity of microbes.
- Add a prebiotic food most days (onions, garlic, beans, oats, slightly green bananas).
- Include a fermented food daily ā a few spoonfuls of yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, or miso.
- Eat fresh produce unpeeled when it's sensible (well-washed).
- Choose whole grains over refined where you can.
- Go slow if you're sensitive ā increase fiber and ferments gradually, with plenty of water.
The 5R Framework ā Your Restoration Roadmap
Everything so far has been the "why." This is the "how" ā the proven, step-by-step approach functional medicine uses to restore gut function and rebuild the intestinal barrier.
The 5R Framework is the practitioner's roadmap for gut restoration. It's deliberately sequential: you can't repopulate a garden you haven't weeded, and you can't rebuild a wall while it's still under attack. Work the steps in order, ideally alongside a qualified practitioner.
Remove
Eliminate gut disruptors ā inflammatory foods (e.g., gluten, dairy, processed sugars), as well as pathogens and toxins identified through proper assessment. This is the weeding step.
Replace
Restore what's missing for good digestion ā digestive enzymes, stomach acid, or bile salts ā so you actually absorb your nutrients instead of fermenting them.
Reinoculate (Repopulate)
Repopulate the microbiome with beneficial bacteria using targeted probiotics plus prebiotic-rich and fermented foods. Re-seed the ecosystem you cleared.
Repair
Rebuild the mucosal lining of the intestinal tract with targeted support such as L-glutamine, zinc, or aloe vera. This is where the barrier from Chapter 1 gets restored.
Rebalance
Lock it in with sustainable lifestyle habits ā prioritize sleep, manage stress, and stay physically active. This is what makes the results last.
The 5R Framework sits within the broader functional medicine model, used alongside tools like the DIGIN assessment, the Functional Medicine Matrix, and the Timeline to tailor a plan to your specific imbalances. It's not a one-size protocol ā it's a structure for personalization.
The next two chapters put 5R into real-world practice with Dr. Candice's field-tested tips for the two most common complaints she sees ā constipation and diarrhea. Notice how each tip quietly maps onto a step: hydration and fiber (Rebalance), stomach acid (Replace), food sensitivities and infections (Remove), microbial balance (Reinoculate).
Practical Tips for Constipation
Dr. Candice's field notes ā direct, honest, and tested on real patients (and, by her own admission, herself).
Start with water ā really
"How much water do you drink?" is such a simple question that it's easy to skip ā we assume everyone has tried that already. But a common mistake is to increase fiber without first increasing fluids, which makes constipation worse, not better.
Aim for half your body weight in fluid ounces per day. (A 150-lb person targets ~75 oz.) Then build fiber: most Americans get around 15 g/day; aim for 30ā50 g of dietary fiber ā well above the usual 25ā30 g recommendation.
Protect your morning rhythm
If you're a constipated person, you know the anxiety of the morning window ā miss it, and the whole day is off. Keep your wake time and morning ritual consistent, even on weekends.
- Start the morning with 8 oz of room-temperature water.
- The squatty potty is your friend.
- Keep fresh ginger or ginger tea on hand ā a gentle motility (prokinetic) support.
- Pre-cut veggies in the fridge: if it's ready to grab, you'll actually eat it.

Could it be low stomach acid? (Replace)
Low stomach acid can contribute to constipation. People in this category often struggle to digest heavy protein or meat-heavy meals, or feel like food "just sits" and moves through too slowly.

Hidden food sensitivities (Remove)
Constipation can be how a food sensitivity shows up. Gluten and dairy are the famous offenders, but corn, soy, shellfish, and eggs are common too ā and honestly, any food can be the culprit.

Rule out the thyroid
A low-functioning thyroid is a notorious contributor to constipation and SIBO. Many conventional panels only check TSH and T4, which misses much of the picture.
A complete thyroid panel includes TSH, T4, T3, RT3, TPO, and thyroglobulin antibodies. Discuss with your practitioner whether a fuller workup is appropriate for you.
Address the microbial picture (Remove ā Reinoculate)
The main microbial contributors to constipation are methane-predominant SIBO, dysbiotic flora (an imbalance of beneficial and unfavorable microbes), and yeast overgrowth. You can over-hydrate
Some people drink so much they dilute their electrolytes, which can worsen nausea and loose stools. More isn't always better.
Aim for half your body weight in fluid ounces per day (a 150-lb person targets ~75 oz) ā and make sure you're replacing electrolytes, not just water.
Choose the right fiber
If you tend toward loose stool, soluble fiber is your friend; insoluble fiber may make things worse. You want both eventually, but lean soluble for now.

Calm the stress response (Rebalance)
If you live with urgency and always know where the nearest bathroom is, stress and anxiety are likely part of the picture. Stomach acid & protein digestion (Replace)
